Students are being educated on how to become ‘Wildcare Heroes’ through caring for animals, as the Wildcare Inc NT DVD is launched in Northern Territory schools today.

Minister for Education, Peter Chandler said ‘Wildcare Heroes’ educates children about the importance of the environment and wildlife and encourages students to become heroes and ambassadors for wildlife.

“It introduces students to native animals, encourages them to come to their aid when they are injured or orphaned and educates them to leave it to the professionals to raise and handle them when necessary” Mr Chandler said.

The Department of Education will distribute 200 copies to primary schools across the Northern Territory.

‘Wildcare Heroes’ links to the Australian Curriculum and provides students with a sense of social responsibility within the community. There is also a strong connection with the Science as a Human Endeavour strand of the Australian Curriculum.

“The DVD aims to teach students to respect and protect our wildlife, report and rescue any animals being mistreated, and explains their role in looking after the animal for the first 24 hours until they can get it to an experienced person.” Mr Chandler said.

“The DVD also talks about the dangers of some animals, such as snakes, and that an adult’s help and permits are required to care for our wildlife.”

In addition to the DVD, Wildcare NT volunteers provide talks at schools throughout the year.

“I commend Wildcare Inc NT for taking the initiative to develop a positive campaign and educating Northern Territory students on the importance of wildlife.”
